Distribution Transformers are used to reduce the high voltage to a low voltage level, that is suitable for distribution lines. It ensures that the voltage level is dropped to a safe level for the end user to use it. Distribution Transformers are used in the Transmission and supply of electricity to houses, industries, and commercial spaces. Distribution Transformers are an essential part of an electrical system because they are used to control voltage and manage alternating currents while transmitting electrical energy. 

 

Distribution Transformers are usually used for the distribution of power in Residential and industrial areas. Generally, Distribution transformers include three Standards. IS 1180 Part-1, IS 2026 and IEC 60076. 

 

Distribution Transformer can also be categorized in other parameters like OFF Load Type (OCTC/OCKT) and ON Load (OLTC). Where OFF Load is used where there is very low voltage fluctuation from the grid (11kV/22kV/33kV) then you can use OFF Load Type Transformers. If there is a very high Voltage Fluctuation from the Grid (11kV/22kV/33kV) then you should go for ON Load (OLTC). ON Load Tap Changer can Change Voltage during the loading condition of your Factory/Plant. Where the OFF Load Transformer Can Not Change Voltage during loading conditions you must shut down your plant and then you can change voltage. The ON Load Transformer can automatically change the voltage that you have set in the relay between ranges. If you are using an ON Load Tap changer then you should regularly check the counter of the tap changer. This counter shows how many times the transformer changed the tap. It is recommended that If counters show a reading more than 5000 then you should contact a Technical Service person for more information.

 

The government has Specified ratings for which transformers are used for Distribution purposes up to 2500kVA. Due to major applications in the Distribution Transformer, there is a need to reduce losses of Distribution Transformer. So the Government has Declared a Chart for Losses which is as below. If your transformer’s Efficiency is very good or Losses are less then you can conserve energy and save money also.
